Hit? Kicked? Burned alive?

The WSPA received some graphic footage about a mass cull of pigs in Egypt which shows pigs being hit with iron bars, kicked and burned alive with chemicals. At first the government claimed it to be a precaution against the swine flu but the relocation of pigs from densely populated areas of Cairo was already decided about a year ago. The present problem with the swine flu is more a kind of "good excuse" for the senseless culling of these pigs.

Please write to the Egyptian Prime Minister to ask for an end of the killing!!!

Ghent goes veggie

How amazing is that? A whole town goes vegetarian once a week as council officials announced. The city of Ghent will go vegetarian in co-operation with Belgium´s national vegetarian organisation EVA every Thursday to combat the impact on livestock on the environment.

Although Ghent doesn´t go vegan, going vegetarian once a week as a whole town is one step. Find the whole article here.

Veggie Pride

Last weekend on May 16th the Uk´s first Veggie Pride took place in Birmingham! The pride included a carnival (which I wasn´t able to attend, unfortunately) live shows with Macka B., belly dancers, a samba band as well as some food and info stalls.

It is a pity the weather was so bad, it was stormy with some heavy rain spells, followed by some sun... To be honest, I´m a bit disappointed. I would have expected more people to attend, especially as it was the first Veggie Pride in the UK. There weren´t too many stalls, too, but at least everything offered was vegan. The stalls were amongst some others of Blue Lotus, The Green Garden Café, Vegan Catering Campaigns, Something Fishy, Yoga in daily life, Vegan Society, Viva! and Sea Shephard. The list of stalls looks actually a bit a larger than it looked like in reality. There was even an area where you could attend to a small yoga course. If it wouldn´t have rained, I might have liked to try it. From the size it reminded me of the Veggie Street Day in Germany. But it was still entertaining with the life acts, like especially the one of Macka B. He explained in an amusing medley what vegans can eat, telling all the various vegetables and fruit up to tofu. That was perfect for people who are often asked "What can you have as a vegan? Grass? Salad?" It was also a great opportunity to meet other vegans you know of the forums or from somewhere else.

I feel like they expected more people to participate, too. I hear there are hopes for another one next year. Fingers crossed - I really do hope so with more people, please. Where have you all been?

Say no to meat

I recently disovered a new petition which aims to permit the meat consumption by law. Pressure onlyWe all, or at least us vegans, know about the facts what meat consumption does to our health, environment, economic etc etc. In general, I like the idea of the petition. However, I think it´s still everyone own´s choice what to consume, although it is making us angry that the meat eaters keep on closing their eyes and often don´t seem to believe us. We´ve all came across these discussions with meat eaters and usually they won´t agree as long as they feel like we are persuading them. Of course, we try that for some point. Maybe it´s easier to "persuade" them when they see veganism is not as difficult as they think in addition to vegan lifestyle promoting campaigns. Every change takes its time. causes more pressure - but from the other party.

Coffee Shop Update - Starbucks

Yay! I am happy to announce Starbucks is no longer charging for soya milk and syrups! Well, this applies only if you get yourself a Starbucks Card, register online and within the UK - not in Germany... But hey, it´s a step forward and as a vegan you save up to 70p on your cappuccino or latte macchiato! And of course, as a coffee addict, I got one of these Starbucks Cards which work like a prepaid card.

Yay!

Wild animals in circuses

Last week the German party "Die Grünen" demanded a so-called positive list for animals in circuses. The request means a ban of wild animals in circuses by law, which will probably be discussed at the lower house of the German parliament this Wednesday. The German counties have already asked for a ban of circuses for at least the especially "problematic" animal species since 2003, however, the ministry for consumers has steadily blocked an effective protection of elephants, bears, lions or giraffes. To put more pressure on the responsible MP Ilse Aigner your action is required: please send an e-mail to the other MPs asking them to support this initiative! (German form letter and addresses are provided)

Victory!

A histric victory has been achieved last week: the EU parliament banned the import and tade of seal products! 550 votes of 640 made that possible. It´s amazing and it will secure the life of some more of these cute seals... One step for the seals, but a large step for men (in sense of a start of thinking). Read more here.
