Yakso Gouda

Here it goes, a review about another vegan cheese I came accidentally across the other day at a German health food store. I haven´t seen this brand before, so I wanted to try it. It was actually more expensive than the other vegan cheese styles I´ve had so far.

This Gouda Style is produced by Yakso, a dutch company, and approved by the vegan society. It is based on soya milk, contains also pea proteine and is matured with a milk acid based on vegetarian soils.

Doesn´t sound so bad so far. SO FAR. I opened the package and, of course, I wanted to smell it first. The smelt was horrible disgusting, actually a bit like a mixture of gas an plastic. Brave I was even to try it. It was a small piece I tried and it was awful. It tasted just like it smelt, there was no way for me to try eating more of it. Usually, when I bought a vegan cheeze which did not taste that great to me, I just added it to burgers, casseroles or somthing and you didn´t notice it that much anymore. BUT this I couldn´t even imagine with THAT cheeze! I regret to have paid a lot for this crap only for trying a small piece and having to throw it away afterwards. At least you have the benefit of it to know the money wouldn´t be worth it. Be careful, there also other cheese styles by this company. Those might taste the same. Definitely a case for the "EEEK-Yuk!"-section.

Artichoke Dip

The other evening I felt like preparing a dip with my left artichoke hearts. I know there´s another nicely version which is baked with tofu on top. This isn´t bad either, it´s based on a mock-tuna recipe I found at vegweb.com once. Actually, with the artichoke it really looks a bit tunaish, although not that much in my version.

Ingridients: 4 artichoke hearts, 1 tsp nutritional yeast flakes, 1 tb houmous, 1/2 tsp tamari, 1 spring onion, salt, pepper, oregano to taste

Method: Mash the artichoke hearts, might work even better if you already add some houmous. Cut the spring onion and add together with the other ingredients. Mash as finely as you prefer. This dip has been even great as a topping on a salad. It´s also great on a sandwich or on pasta.
