Crussh!

I found another great juice bar which does vegan smoothies and also some vegan snacks (i.e. falafel wrap, Japanese detox salad). It is actually a juice bar chain which is spread over London. There are some smaller and also some bigger branches. The branch at Notting Hill Gate for example is a bigger one. There are some comfortable seating oppotunities with sofas upstairs or you can also sit outside when the weather is good at one of the three tables. It´s only a pitty the sun will never get there, but it is still great to enjoy the smoothie while watching people.

"Crussh" offers a large range of smoothies, although their smoothies all contain usual youghurt. As a balance their so called "juices" which are obviously smoothies to me, are only without yoghurt are vegan. You have to choose from "solo juices" that only consist of orange, apple or carrot. Their "combo juices" are far more interesting to name only a few: the "Clean & Lean" with melon, apple and cranberry; "Love juice" made of peach, strawberry, orange and banana; "Purifier" with apple, carrot, celery, ginger and mixed red fruit or the "Green Goddess" made of kiwi, pear, apple, lime, celery, cucumber and spinach. There are still several mre to discover! As "booster" you can add ginseng, guarana, echinacea, aloe vera or vitamin c. The staff is also preparing you any smoothie "made-to-order" without mourning, i.e. it is no problem to order a smoothie with some alterations like dairy free or leaving out any ingredient you don´t like and adding another one for that. Another big PLUS for "Crussh". If you don´t get out there with a healthy drink which is also prepared in front of your eyes (the staff even wears gloves when preparing the drinks!), I wouldn´t know what you did wrong. On their homepage you can also find out about the nutrients your health drink or food contains.

"Crussh" does also have other vegan options, like some salads or even the porridge is prepared with soya milk. Moreover, they offer a choice of soups and stews every day from which some are vegan as well. It is cleary stated on the menu if it is dairy-/gluten-/wheat-free and vegetarian which items are often vegan. They also always have the Nakd-Bars and a fruit and nut selection at their stores.

Tibits

The "Tibits" has its origins actually in Zurich and has two branches in London: one at Hendon Street (off Regent Street) and one is located in the new Westfield shopping centre in Hammersmith. The word "tibits" derives from the words titbits/tidbits, which stands in his connection for fresh, healthy and deliciuos food, which I can´t doubt since I´ve been there.

Besides their really extremely relaxing environment they created in modern warm colour combinations and interior asseccoirs it has the atmosphere of a high-class restaurant. It is a bit less pricey, though. They offer a buffet with a good choice of vegan dishes, whether hot or cold, which are clearly marked with a "V" and also pretty large sandwiches. Although they charge your selection by weight, they have a price cap at 9.50 pounds. Moreover, they have a vegan apple turnover in a shape of an apple. How cute! Most of the beverages they serve are vegan, even the alcoholic ones. If you are not sure about something, the staff has a list of which is vegan and which is not and don´t hesitate to look it up for you. You can have your food either to take away or to eat in.

At some dishes, however, I wondered why those are not vegan. For example, there is a yoghurt-based dessert which could easily be preapared with soya yoghurt. Their cocktail range is not that large, but tasty! Only the glasses could be a bit larger for that price.
Anyway, I think it´s pretty comfortable in there and somehow I like it that they charge by weight. Sometimes, it happens, that you order a dish and just don´t finish it because it´s been so much. Here it can´t happen to you as long as your eyes aren´t larger than the size of your stomach ;-)

Marks & Spencer

Marks & Spencer´s cosmetics and toiletries and labelled with the Leaping Bunny Logo, which means the products are guaranteed not to be tested on animals. That is a very good sign, but are those products also vegan? They have a lot in their range, especially for us ladies, like shea nut butter shower gel or coconut deodorant... I wasn´t sure about all the ingredients and contacted their customer service.

And I got very good news! The technologist confirmed that none of their shower gels, deodorants or lip balms contain any animal derived products. Even some of their make-up products are vegan. I was told that only the following products are not vegan: all mascaras, Good Stick Concealer, Per Una Mousse Blusher 2, Autograph Mousse Blusher, Autograph Wrinkle Filler, Autograph Cosmotox Foundation, Lipsticks, Per Una Eyeshadows. Although a lot is out of question, there still remains a bit of a choice for us vegans.

For the groceries Marks & Spencer sell, they publish regularly updated lists at their homepage, which also has a vegan list and can be found here. It might be a good list and they even provide allergy lists for all other dietry requirements like gluten free, but unfortunately, I already found some wrong listed items. Therefore the lists can give you a good impression what is vegan and what is not, still it´s better to check the items you want directly in store before you buy them.

Moreover, Marks & Spencer is one of the few companies which charge 5p for food carrier bags. The money they gained through the charge is donated for the environmental charity "Groundwork". Most of the other companies give their plastic bags away for free, as many as you want which hasn´t been a custom for a long time in Germany.

Winter Wonderland @ Hyde Park

I am astonished by the traditional German Christmas Market at the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park Corner. It has really a lot of typical German stalls, although it is not quite a traditional German Christmas Market. It is more a mixture of a christmas market and a carnival. And almost everything offered is written on signs in German! I didn´t expect that. Unfortunately, most of the things there is obviuosly not vegan: like krakauer, steak and so on. I took a closer look to the other products.

Good news first: vegan is mulled wine (Glühwein), "feuerzangenbowle", jägermeister, christ stollen and the corncob, the german beer.

NOT vegan are: pretzels (all kinds) and the gingerbreads at the stall with the gingerbread hearts, dutch mini pancakes.

Ok, mostly the drinks are vegan which you might need with the smells of bratwurst. At least better than nothing and if you haven´t left the city, why not finish the festive days there? It´ll be there until January 4th, so there´s enough time left to visit it. The other stalls are also very nice and interesting, offering wooden craved home accessoirs, ethnical stuff...

Coffee, please! - X-mas Update #2

Only now I saw Coffee Republic also offering some x-mas specials. A bit late, though, but not too late! For me as a coffee addict and for you, of course, I checked it out.

Coffee Republic offers a Mint Moccha, Orange Blossom Hot Chocolate and a Mince Pie Latte. Bad news first: they couldn´t tell me whether the cocoa used for moccha or hot chocolate is suitable for vegans. The package of their cocoa powder does not list any ingredients! o.O The good news are, however, the Mince Pie Latte is ok. The bottle of the regarding syrup even states "suitable for vegetarians & vegans"! There you go: ordered with soya milk an everything is fine. It tastes gorgeous, by the way. I´ve liked it a lot and even like it a bit better than a Gingerbread Latte. I´ve never head mince pie in my life before, so I had a kind of first mince pie as a coffee. ;-)

Note: Animal Aid´s Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre

I know, I know, it´s been a few days more ago that there was Animal Aid´s Christmas Without Cruelty Fayre. I´m extremely sorry for telling you so late about it. But better than never? How could I leave a you without at least a small report about when I was there?!

The CWC Fayre 2008 was on November 30th at the Kensington Town Hall in London - the same venue like it was for the Vegan Festival in September. The entrance fee was 2 pounds per person this time, at the Vegan Festival it was 1 pound. I think, it´s still reasonable and it is for something good in the end, so there´s no reason to complain about it.

Actually, the fayre was pretty much the same like the Vegan Festival. Most of the same stalls were there as well, although there were a bit less than at the Vegan Festival. For that there were some more places with tables available. The choice of stall was still very good: there were stall from Redwood, Bute Island, Heaenly Cakes, Yaoh, Bourgeois Boheme, Viva, PETA, Lush, Veganstore, Roots of Compassion, SARC... to name only a few. Additionally, there were several more stalls especially downstairs, which sold x-mas items.

There were some lectures, too, but less than at the Vegan Festival which wasn´t too bad. There was only lecture to one time, so that you didn´t have to decide to which to go and had to skip another interesting one. There was an auction of celebrity donated items, lectures about "Alternatives to animal experiments in education", "Civil liberties and and the rights of protesters", "Close don London Zoo", "Humour - the campaigner´s secret weapon?" and the presentation of the winner of the Vegan Enironmental Awards 2008, which was Yaoh.

Resume: it was really very much the same like the Vegan Festival, with the only difference of a bit fewer stalls and x-mas related items being sold. If I had known about that before! Anyway, it´s good to know now that there are 2 vegan fayres in London per year! And if I hadn´t been there, I wouldn´t have discovered Lush´s new and only vegan lip balm: "Let them eat cake!"

Also kein Grund zur Beschwerde.

Coffee, please! - X-mas Update

Every year when the Christmas time arrives, the coffee shops create special drinks for this season. Two of those are Starbucks and Costa.

Starbucks offers this year the Dark Cherry Moccha, Gingerbread Latte and the Toffee Nut Latte. Good news for us vegan: all of these creations are vegan as long as they´re ordered with soya milk and without cream and drizzles or toppings, of course. For the Dark Cherry Moccha they use the same cocoa as for the usual Moccha. They let me take a look at the syrups they use and they looked fine to me. Btw, I can really recommend the Dark Cherry Moccha! ;-) I also disovered that in some branches you can buy the coffee syrups used for the winter specialties, which inlude Dark Cherry and Gingerbread at least.

Costa also has two new thingies: a maple syrup latte and they offer another new syrup! It is "Chocolate Cookie" and very delicious. Here they also let me take a look at the ingredients of the syrup, which were fine. Moreover, it is of Monin. Like I mentioned earlier, all Monin syrups for coffee are vegan. Well, and the Maple Syrup Latte is fine, as long as ordered with soya milk.

Nero now offers an Amaretto Latte! The amaretto syrup is of Monin, therefore absolutely fine. Order with soy milk and you will have another very nice waming coffee beverage...

Enjoy!

|*VeganMoFo*| #25: Coffee, please!

It has been astonishing for me at how many places you can get your coffee served with soya milk here in London. There is not only one coffee shop chain, like Starbucks. Ok, there are also more in Germany, but I haven´t been at so much as to I used to live in a small town and didn´t get so much around. It was also surprising for me that the coffee shops here even have some vegan snack options! As it seems to be a kind of rule that there always is at least one of the other coffee shops where there is Starbucks. I wondered at which of these coffee shops I´d have the best choice for my coffee and did some research. I realized that the cappuccino and the latte macchiato costs the same at all places, except at ATM. ATM is more a take away, which can be found at several stations (e.g. Liverpool Street, Hammersmith or Wimbledon). I also had to notice there is nothing like a coffee culture here in London. It doesn´t matter if you order a cappuccino or a soya latte, it is all served in a mug or cup. I have only known soya latte served in a tall glass so far. I think the Londoners don´t need something like that, they often have their coffee to take away anyway.

Starbucks:2,05/2,40/2,60 per size, +30p soya milk, +35p syrup
Snacks: Houmous&Falafel Wrap, Falafel Panini
Costa: 2,05/2,35/2,55 per size, no charge for soya milk, +35p syrup
Snacks: Fruit Salad
Nero: Take away: 1,55/1,85/2,15 per size, Drink in 1,60/2,00/2,30 per size
+40p soya milk, +30p syrup
Snacks: Coriander-Houmous Wrap, Penne Pasta with roasted red
pepper
and tomato sauce, Crisps: sea salt&balsamic vinegar/sea salt, Fruit Salad Classic/Tropical, Marinated Green Olives, Mints, Mixed Fruit & Nuts
Coffee Republic: 2,05/2,40/2,60 per size, +40p soya milk, +40p syrup
ATM: one size only: Cappuccino 1,90, Coffee Latte 2,00, no charge for soya
milk,
30p for syrup
Snacks: potentially the Tradtional Flapjack

In general you have to be aware of drizzles or toppings like caramel sauce. Caramel sauce often contains skimmed milk powder or something similar. Concerning Moccha or Hot Chocolate: it is "safe" at Starbucks as long as you order it with soya milk and without whipped cream. Moreover, only their Classic Hot Chocolate is vegan. And, by the way, their Chai is not vegan. Some branches of Nero do vegan cocoa powder so that you can have a hot chocolate or moccha there. I don´t know why, but some branches seem to use different cocoa. So it´s always better to ask. But Nero offers a better choice of coffee syrup like any other coffee shop, e.g. also coconut. Unfortunately, they don´t have sugar free syrup, you will get that only at Starbucks and sometimes at Coffee Republic (they seem to be often run out of that). What I also like very much, that all coffee shops except of Starbucks, use the coffee syrup of Monin, which is, as I asked them personally shortly ago, completely vegan.

It is still a hard choice where to go when you want to have your coffee. A big advantage is definitely that Costa doesn´t charge for the soya milk and they offer a real bowl of coffee (their largest one, my face vanishes in it! LOL). Important to know is, however, that the cocoa at Costa is not vegan and therefore are drizzles with it, hot chocolate and moccha not suitable for us. On the other hand, Nero offers a loyalty card and I know the moccha at my Nero around the corner is vegan with the soya milk. And if you´re hungry, they also have the better choice of vegan food. The only two vegan snacks at Starbucks are not always at every branch available.

Oh, and if you ever come across a "Crepes Affaires", don´t get a coffee there! There I was served the worst Soya Latte in my life! Their interpreation of a Coffee Latte is just to stir cold soya milk into the espresso shot - that´s it, no foam, no anything. I couldn´t believe my eyes and for them it was the usual way to serve a Coffee Latte. It tasted to awful, I had to leave it.

Snacks: Houmous&Falafel Wrap, Falafel Panini
Costa: 2,05/2,35/2,55 je Größe, kein Aufschlag für Sojamilch, +35p für Sirup
Snacks: Fruit Salad
Nero: Take away: 1,55/1,85/2,15 je Größe, Drink in 1,60/2,00/2,30 per size,
+40p Sojamilch, +30p Sirup
Snacks: Coriander-Houmous Wrap, Penne Pasta with roasted red
peppe
and tomato sauce, Crisps: sea salt&balsamic vinegar/sea salt,
Fruit Salad Classic/ Tropical, Marinated Green Olives, Mints, Mixed Fruit & Nuts

Coffee Republic: 2,05/2,40/2,60 je Größe, +40p Sojamilch, +40p Sirup
ATM: Einheitsgröße: Cappuccino 1,90, Coffee Latte 2,00, kein Aufschlag für Sojamilch,
+30p for für Sirup
Snacks: potentiell derTradtional Flapjack

|*VeganMoFo*| #15: Veganese Japanese #2

For the ones among us who don´t have time, are in a hurry for something, or just would like to enjoy some sushi in the sunshine at park: there is a take away-option for sushi! I would like to introduce you to the "Wasabi". When I discovered Wasabi at first I was amazed by the opportunity to create an own bento to take away. That was really new to me. But what do I wonder? Here in London almost everything you get to take away.

At Wasabi you have a kind of fridge with prepacked sushi pieces for about 1 pound for each pack of two where you can choose from. It feels like being in a supermarket with the difference that you don´t see soya milk, juices or youghurts. LOL

A few weeks before I was welcoming my first vegan visitor from Germany, to whom I wanted to show a Wasabi, I decided to get sure what really is vegan there and asked at their head office. The answer disappointed me a lot when I was told that their sushi chefs use mayonaise on their gloves when preparing the food to prevent the rice sticking to them when shaping the sushi. So we have there a bit more than "traces of.... due to cross-contamination during production" which would make in my opinion their tofu nigiri, hosomaki and veggie roll unsuitable for vegans. I´ve never heard of any disgusting production procedures like these before! However, what surprised me, they are selling two hot dishes, which are vegan (Veggie Noodle Soup and Tofu Jahang). Moreover, they told me their seaweed onigiri (triangular rice ball), seaweed salad, wakame salad and edamame would also be vegan. Their soya sauce is also vegan, thee are selling small sachets of Kikkoman soya sauce for 5p.

I think I´ll better look out for another sushi to take away where they don´t have so awful production procedures for sushi.

wasabi.jpg

I würde gerne das "Wasabi" vorstellen.

|*VeganMoFo*| #10:Grain Shop

The "Grainshop" is certainly one of the shops in London which has actually a small history. It was established 30 years ago when the Beatles lived in Notting Hill and the hippie culture ruled this part of London. Although these times are over and the management has changed over the years, it´s appearance still shows you some of the old spirit. The location of the trendy and famous Portobello Road couldn´t be better. It is a wholly vegetarian Take Away with vegan options which even does rye and sourdough bread!

Where do you find something like that that here in London - fresh rye and sourdough bread? Ok, you´ll probably find some at the one or other health food store or pre-packed at supermarkets. But here it is reasonably priced: the rye bread costs 1,40 and the sourdough bread depending on the size of the loaf costs 1,20/2,40 Pounds. Moreover, they offer a good choice of salads, hot and cold food, which you might assemble to a small box for 3,99 or a large box for 5,99 Pounds. That is, as far as I can say, for London still reasonable. It is indicated which dishes are vegan and which are not. If you are not sure, the very friendly staff can tell you anything. They just know what is in they serve. Even their range of cakes isn´t that bad. Firstly, they are all at 1,45 - 1,50 per slice, secondly there are also several vegan ones (e.g. brownies, coconut cake, carrot cake, apricot & almond slice, date & lemon slice...). I like it very much that they don´t only mark what is vegan, they mark if their products are nut-/gluten- or wheat-free. Somehow I get the impression this is quite common here in London: to mark food appropriately for special diets.

grainshop2.jpg

|*VeganMoFo*| #4: The Beatroot

1827955741_622702aa52.jpg

The "Beatroot" calls itself a vegetarian café, which offers a good choice of warm and cold food, as well as cakes, with several clearly marked delicious vegan and wheat free meals. It is located at 92 Berwick Street in Soho, London. I was there today for a meet-up with a vegan group. I thought that would be the perfect opportunity to check out another vegan option in London and tell about it. There you see I´ve got an excuse to eat out in London, I´m checking out the options for you ;-)

As you can probably see from the picture, the Beatroot doesn´t offer too much place to sit, so I´d think it is more a good place for take away. Somehow I find it still cozy. If you´re lucky, you´ll get a free table. As long as you´re not there when there´s a vegan meet-up with about 20 people or at "rush hours" when everyone comes up with the idea to get some food there, you might be lucky.

What does the Beatroot offer for us vegans? As a wholly vegetarian place with several vegan meals a lot for such a small place to favourable prices, if you ask me. You can choose between 3 box sizes from small to large (for 3,90; 4,90 and 5,90) and let them assemble what you wish of their hot foods and salads, which is prepared freshly every day as they say. For vegan hot meals you can choose between Shephard´s Pie, Curry of the day, Bean Hotpot of the day, Organic Rice, Tofu-Stir Fry, Sausage Rolls, Blanched Broccoli and Roasted Vegetables. Only two of their nine offered salads are not vegan and they usually also offer a Soup of the day. Moreover, all teir cakes are vegan o.O Personally I highly recommend the carrot cake (nut-free!)! I was told the clusters were also great! Of course, they also do fresh juices and smoothies, which all sound delicious (e.g. Blue Moon whith blueberries, banana, apple and vanilla milk or Breakfast Smoothie with banana, dates, oats, milk, strawberries and cinnamon). I´ll try them next time LOL

I can tell you, the hot food I had ( a collection of anything, had to try it: Bean Hotpot, broccoli, roasted vegetables and sausage rolls) was very good. Unfortunately, my eyes with all the good looking meals were bigger than my stomach was and I had to give in. I also liked very much that they are obviously not only caring for their food, for the environment as well - you´ll certainly find no plastic cutlery over there, it´s all made of wood.

The Beatroot is not expensive, I think. Considering the several box sizes they really stuff well so that you can barely close them, the prices for their fresh juices (small 2,20 and large 2,90), smoothies (3,20) and coffee variations with soya milk (from 1,40 to 1,80) it has definitely favourable prices for London. Plus: the staff is very nice, they´re smiling all the time and can answer you any question you might have. So get your butts off, if you´re in Soho and take advantage of the Beatroot to find it out on your own!

beatroot.jpg

Was bietet uns Veganern das Beatroot eigentlich? Als warme vegane Gerichte gibt es die Auswahl von Shephard´s Pie, Curry of the day, Bean Hotpot of the day, Organic Rice, Tofu-Stir Fry, Sausage Rolls, Blanchiertem Broccoli und Geröstetes Gemüse.

|*VeganMoFo*| #1: Vegan Wonderland

1827955741_622702aa52.jpg

There is a real huge Whole Foods store of "Fresh&Wild" at High Street Kensington: spread over three floors with all vegan products a German vegan can think of - except they don´t do the Tofutti cream cheese spread.

At the entrance area on the groud floor is a bakery with a good choice of gluten-free and vegan bread. The bakery does vegan cupakes and a vegan chocolate cake. That one I wouldn´t have recognized as a vegan chocolate cake, if there wouldn´t have been a sign. It looks very much like the Austrian Sacher cake. Inside there are salad bars or bars for warm meals as well where you can select your meals on your own (they even mark carrots and potatos "vegan"!). You can even let them prepare fresh sushi made-to-order! The ground floor is mainly used for take away, the winery and the cashiers.

In the basement you can find fruit and vegs and all the other groceries. There also is the opportunity to serve yourself with peanut-/almond-/cashewbutter with the amounts you need. The same goes for beans, flours, flakes.... At the fridge there is one section displaying a big sign: "VEGAN & VEGETARIAN". Here begins the dream for German Vegans to come true: you´ll find the whole (!) range of Redwood, Sojade, Alpro and Bute Island, the biggest choice of tofu I´ve ever seen and they even offer some products of Wheaty, Viana and Taifun (of course, here it´s a bit more expensive than in Germany). At the freezers you´ll find several vegan products of Amy´s Kitchen, Linda McCartney, Fry´s, all kinds of Booja-Booja/Tofutti/B*Nice and Swedish Glace ice cream. Their cupboards are even divided into "mexican", "asian" or "italian" sections. You get all kinds of snack bars, almost all Nana Cookies, products of Orgran, even raw cocoa butter! There also is a large section for natural remedies, supplements and offer massage! The truffles counter has several truffles marked "vegan" and you always get any truffle-boxes of Booja-Booja.

Upstairs on the first floor is a large restaurant with several counters for each cuisine offering some vegan meals, like at the mid-eastern bar. There they also do fresh prepared smoothies and vegan milkshakes. Maybe I have been blind, that I haven´t seen more meals marked "vegan", but at every counter they indicate that you can top up your meal with anything, so if you can top up, yu can certainly also omit something. Therefore I would think there might also be a vegan option.

It is quite a big store offering anything you need or can think of. That balances the lack of Tofutti cream cheese and cheese slices. But for that the next Holland&Barrett is not far away. Everytime I was told "Fresh&Wild" is expensive I could only smile. The vegan products are more expensive in Germany and you usually have to order them what makes it even more expensive. Here everything is just in the fridges! Moreover, as a vegan in Germany you are used to expensive prices on vegan products as you usually have to order things like vegan cheese or products of Redwood etc. which makes them even more expensive.

freshandwild.jpg

Festival of Life

The "Festival of Life" took place in London at the Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, on September 27th. It was a small festival more about raw foods, but also suitable for vegans and was kind of "spiritual". The entry was more than at the Vegan Festival, a day ticket was 6 Pounds and one which included also the evening programme, was 10 Pounds.

I arrived very much in time, probably too punctual. At quarter to eleven in the morning most of the stalls were still busy with building up. Although, the first talks and workshops began at 11 am. There weren´t too many visitors to that time, which changed massively to lunch time - it was crowded as it was at the Vegan Festival! There were also all kind of people of all ages; "neo-hippies", older people, "casual people", eco-styled ones, black people.... You could realize that there is also no typical outfit or style for raw foodists, as it is with the vegans. The festival had for a part an esoteric and spiritual atmosphere and was a bit more oriented to families.

Their programm kept one busy the whole day: there were workshops and talks about Yoga, Laughter, From cooked to raw, Raw Magic, Raw Food Revolution, History of Raw Food Nutrition, Raw Chocolate Recipes, Permaculture, Raw Hemp Nutrition, Meditation and food for consciousness, Consciousness Culture & Cake, Healing Power of Animals... and a lot more! It was so varified and not easy to decide for one as all activities took place at the same tame.

The talk abot "Raw Hemp Nutrition" was spectacular, that´s something one just had to see on hs own. A rather small young guy named Free Rob informed very entertaining about hemp nutrition with a rap and other action. It was amazing how he entertained the whole people at his talk. Additionally, he served delicious self-made truffles made of hemp seeds, goji berries, dates, coconut and raisins.

There were also several stalls, although not so many like at the Vegan Festival. But you could still get a lot like Raw Chocolate, clothes, Second Hand, jewellery, several stalls which offered raw food essentials like maca or lucuma powder and cacao nibs. I felt like it was still very expensive, there weren´t so many great offers like there were at the Vegan Festival. The stall of a wonder healer was also very interesting: "When nothing else works... brief treatment of aniety, anger, weight loss, grief, fear.... taster here and today for only 10 Pounds" LOL "Veggie-TV" were also there besides of stalls of "Raw Gaia", "Raw Food Party", "Space of Love" or the "London Wildlife Trust". Moreover, there were freebies: "Tsunamikas". Tsunamikas are small dolls which are made ou of bits and pieces of cloth left over from the tsunami in Asia in 2004. These dolls shall stand for hope, resilience an transformation.

The culinaric part was provided by the InSpiral Lounge and Rainforest Creations. Of course, some stalls at the main hall also offered some food. I couldn´t withstand a raw blueberry date cake of a meditation group... Great was also the raw sushi made with cauliflower and cashew cream, filled with avocado and tomato (I like cauliflower only raw anyway...). The akashe balls with the sprouted houmous of Rainforest Creations were awesome - those were a kind of falafel ball, just raw and you didn´t taste a difference to cooked falafel. As a fan of rwa sweets I provided myself with some stuff for home. Amongst these were a carob ginger and beetroot almond (which also had fennel and pistacchios) bite of the Rainforest Creations. With its unusual green and red colouring still extremely tasty! The truffles of the InSpiral Lounge become legendary, I got a lucuma-lavender, guarana and cocoa-maca truffle. And who can then pass by some maca bites?

It was definitely informative and I enjoyed the "Festival of Life". I learnt a lot, like how to make raw chocolate sweets or that brokkoli sprouts contain 30-50% more protectives against breast cancer than usual brokkoli. It was also interesting to hear that only 2-3% of the coeliacs can´t put on with wheat grass. Unfortunately I have to admit that the talks were often a bit too propagative in my eyes. Obviously it was a kind of standard to tell the visitors about their way to raw foodism due to a bad disease and within a few months were healthy with the raw food diet, how healthier it is in general, how great it is...

Das "Festival of Life" fand am 27.

Also sehr vielfältig.

Also keine Schnäpperchens.

London Vegan Festival

The London Vegan Festival took place on 7 September 2008 at the Kensington Town Hall in London. I wanted to tell you a lot earlier about this unique vegan event, but the lack of time during my well hassled week didn´t let me to do so! I hope you can understand and are not too mad at me...

The admission fee was only 1 Pound for adults, youngsters up to 16 years old were admission free. Entering the entrance at shortly after 11 am in time there were not yet too many people around which would change throughout the lunch time - there it was completely crowded! The most exciting about all these people was, that at least 90% of them must have been vegans I think. The people were of all ages, ethic and livestyle groups. Children, old people, Indians, "Blacks", "Neo-Hippies", Punks... anything. There you could see again that you can´t just put vegans into one specfic lifestyle group with their look, ethic origin or style.

Anyway, the London Vegan Festival had so much to offer: stalls of Redwood, Bute Island, Vegancampaigns, Viva!, Roots of Compassion, Sea Shepheard, Vegan Society, Bourgoois Boheme, Animal Liberation Front Support Group, London Vegans, Lush, Vegan Store, Beanies Health Foods, Yagga or the famous Pogo Café to name only a few. At the food stalls of the respective companies you had the opportunity to taste their products before buying them to special conditions like 3 for 5 Pounds, 10% off or in general to more favourable prices than at the stores here. I don´t know how often I was at the stalls, the choice was so big and overwhelmed with all the impressions you weren´t able to catch anything with one view and you didn´t know where to look first. At least not as German vegan who has never visited a vegan festival before.

But there were not only stalls, there was also a very stuffed programme with workshops, entertainment and speeches. For example there were workshops for vegan campaigning tactics, kitchen cosmetics, making raw chocolate at home, massage, meditation.... Speeches included updates of Sea Shepheard, SHAC, foie gras free york, white meat myths, hemp and the environment.... It was so much and a lot took place at the same time so you didn´t know where to go first!

Of course it was also cared about culinary needs. There were further stalls offering cakes, victoria sponge cake, muffins, raw food, asian or indian cuisines - all vegan! On the one hand it was strange you didn´t have to ask anywhere if it was vegan. On the other hand it made it a lot easier.

I can only say how exciting the Vegan Festival was and wonder why there hasn´t been something similar in Germany.

I´m a smoothie!

Smoothies - I love them! The healthier alternative to usual fruit juice. For everyone who does not know what smoothies are: smoothies are a kind of juice that only consists of pureed fruit and no sugar, preservatives, additives or aromes are added (in the usual and most common case). Nowadays you can get them anywhere and anytime in small bottles or in big ones - but aren´t those the best when they are freshly prepared? Additionally, smoothies are even healthier when freshly made as the bottled ones often are at least slightly pasteurized and loose some nutrients during that process. You can find a lot of juice bars here in London, where fresh smoothies are offered. The best one I´ve come across so far, I found directly at Victoria Station (heading to the direction of Victoria street). It is only a stall, but always there.

Their choice is so big! When I first came there I felt the same way I did when I visited Starbucks the first time - too much choice at once! But still very good - if it is only made of fruit or with some added vegs, with new so-called "superfruit"--- you can even add guarana, soy milk or wheatgrass. The smoothies are fresh prepared in front of your eyes! Depending on which smoothie you want and on the size, their prize range is from 1,70 to 3,45 pounds.

Veganese Japanese #1

A friend of mine who moved nearby to London in December last year, loves japanese food. Before we wanted to meet the first time in London he told me he loves and prefers to eat japanese when he is in London. But are there also some japanese who serve vegan? Me, totally new to London and not being quite aware of all the opportunities here, did some research at Google. There I found out about the "SAKI".

The "SAKI" is located at 4 West Smithfield Street, close to Farringdon Station in the east of Central London. Having found it, we took a look at the menu outside which acutally stated several dishes as "strictly vegetarian" (=vegan)! Ok, let´s give it a shot! Going some stairs down you will enter a reception where you can leave your jackets. There is also stated that you will find on the right the restaurant and on the left the bar. Entering the restaurant room you will find a gorgeous modern and japanese-kind-styled big room. The atmosphere is very comfortable, the staff is extremely nice. When you order green tea, they go ahead filling your cup up until you say you don´t want anymore - but only pay one cup. That balances a bit the food there, as it is not that favourable. They really offer a big choice and it does taste great, but one should better leave it for special occassions when you have some money left. For my grilled aubergine with red miso paste and 6 umeboshi rolls I payed about 11 pounds. This place also seems to be a kind of secret, when we moved over to the bar to taste some of their gorgeous cocktails (but also a bit expensive, usually about 7-8 pounds each) there were only three other tables with some people in the evening.

Despite the prices I highly recommend this place, especially if you want to chill out a bit and have a nice evening out of the hasty big town in the middle of London.

Cheddar Style Sheese

This creamy sheese I can find in London at Sainsbury´s. In Germany you will have to order it via a vegan online store. Here in London I paid 2,35 pounds, in Germany it is about 4 Euros for a 225g package.

Honestly, I have been very suspicious about this creamy sheese style spread as I haven´t been that much positively surprised by all the products of Bute Island, especially by the sliceable Sheese of that company. The creamy sheese has always been ok, at the beginning of my veganism I tasted the soya in their products a lot. It is different with the creamy sheese of Tofutti. And this one is meant to taste like cheese - cheddar style? Does that work? It does! This spread does really taste like a real cheese to spread. You won´t believe it. It definitely tastes great. You can use it for anything: in sauces, as a spread or dip, for lasagna, as topping for vegs.... Unfortunately it is very rich in fat, which a sensitive tongue like mine tastes immediately.

The nutritional information per 100g is: 263 kcal; Protein: 6,2g; Carbohydrates: 6,5g; Sugars: 1,1g; Fat: 23,6g.
